Discussion:
[osg-users] Thoughts on Gitter, or other forums as alternative to our current forum/ML?

Hi All,

I would like feedback on the community about possible forum/mailing
list tools that we could adopt for the OSG and VSG projects. I don't
have any significant experience with Gitter but have just started
looking into it - I see that osgjs has a presence.

Would love to hear what others experiences have been with Gitter or
other similar tools/services.

Cheers,
Robert.

I have no experience. I'd maybe suggest Google Groups as a lazy way out.

But it is like a chat room, right? Without individual topics, just a
single room for conversation...

Fedora uses HyperKitty:
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/***@lists.fedoraproject.org/

It's quite cool. Users can interact with the ML directly with the web
backend and it provides threaded views:

https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/***@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/UXTL3INISMOIVYI4JOYVHCEOFLMFC7CO/

With that said it still has to be hosted somewhere...

We have out dreamhost server that provides the openscenegraph.org
website so potentially we could use this.

Do you know if Hyperkitty replaces the mailing list and forum or does
it mirror an existing mailing list?

If we can grandfather in our existing osg-users list then it could be
a possible replacement of the existing OSG forum that is hanging by a
thread.

Cheers,
Robert

It is a companion to mailman. It can import mailman2 archives and
works as a companion to mailman3.
So I think it would replace the forum while the list would be run by mailman3.

Some installation info:

Robert,
Discourse (https://www.discourse.org) is likely the platform I would choose
today for osgEarth if starting from scratch. It is founded by Jeff Atwood
(of StackOverflow fame), it's open source so you can host it yourself, or
you can pay $100/month for them to host it for you.

Apparently they will sometimes offer discounts or even free hosting for
other open source projects:
