Hello Adegli,

I have been reading over old emails and ran across your email below. I
don't know is you had any other response to it.

VRML is my interim solution. Eventually I need to read a general MCAD
format.

My customers have asked for STEP ( .STP ) support. I have been trying
to find the right way to do this. Here is my current understanding.

STEP is actually a family of formats with application protocols defining
the variations. Have a look at these links:

*
http://www.prostep.org/en/services/was/orga/ - shows STEP
evolving out of IGES
*
http://www.prostep.org/en/services/was/ap/ - shows the APs thus
far
*
https://www.uspro.org/ -
*
http://www.steptools.com/library/standard/index.html - STEP
Tools Inc sells STEP I/O libraries.

ProSTEP is European while USPRO is American.

The MCAD application I have been using outputs AP203 and AP214, which
are MCAD-centric. AP210 has been discussed but no source for this data
has been identified. AP210 is more electro-mechanical.

Hope this helps. If you have more information, please let me know.

Greg

hello,

i get some data's in stp file format, has someone still implemented an
read/writer for osg, or know someone
a library witch can read such CAD files.

Last time I did some investigation about STEP I read that you have to
pay license fees in order to implement a STEP reader - yet I don't know
if this has already changed,

Martin.

Hi all,

I know a bit of STEP and would like to clarify a few points.

There is no such thing as a STEP reader. "The Standard for The
Exchange of Product Model Data, is a comprehensive ISO standard (ISO
10303) that describes how to represent and exchange digital product
information". Since this is very huge STEP provides APs (application
protocols) dedicated to different engineering domains. The two main
ones widely used by CAD software are the AP203 for the aeronautic
industry (Boeing, Airbus) and the AP214 for the automobile industry.

STEP provides a language called EXPRESS to describe models (entities)
and a ASCII format described in Part 21 to exchange instances of these
models. You will need a reader for AP203 and another one for AP214
because the underlying semantic definitions of entities are very
different but they also rely on the same Geometric Definitions
described in Part 42.

STEP is a norm and thus has to be bought (it's composed of dozens of
reference books). But since it is a norm it is also royalty free.

To cut a long story short, if you have CAD data in STEP file formats
open them in the CAD software and save them in a format less semantic
but more geometric that OSG can read !
